Reason for being a hot spotAmount of solid wastes in Arkhangelsk Oblast increased more than three times since the 1st NEFCO/AMAP Report. Includes former A8: Spent motor oil. Since 1995, spent motor oil is not collected and treated in Oblast, and became a serious source of environmental pollution.
Status in elimination procedureNo information
Environmental status in 2003 report4.7 million tons of waste formed in the region. 5908 tons of spent motor oil has been formed and 5621 tons recycled, decontaminated or delivered for decontamination.
Present statusIn 2011: 38.4 million tons of waste formed in the region, including 36.7 million tons of hazard class 5. 318 tons of spent motor oil was formed and 298 tons recycled, econtaminated or delivered for decontamination.
Joint projects 
Actions doneIn 2013, a concessional agreement (public-private partnership) was signed to create common waste management facilities (recycling stations and landfill) for the cities of Arkhangelsk, Novodvinsk and Severodvinsk. Half of the region’s population live in these three cities. Other actions have been, among others, pilot projects on source separation of waste in Severodvinsk. According to official data, the major share of spent motor oil is treated in specialized companies. Altogether 17 companies have a licence for such activities.
